What makes a person saved?

Dear Roger,

If you accept Jesus into your heart at an early age and then never really do anything in your life that involves Him, and then you die, do you still go to Heaven?

Name withheld

Dear Name Withheld,

“Spiritual abortion” is the term I use to describe people who accept Jesus into their hearts at an early age and then never really do anything that indicates being “born again.” Based on the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 13:1-9 and 18-23 (and in the corresponding passages in Mark and Luke), they will not be in Heaven. Their profession of faith in Christ makes little, if any, difference in their lives. Spiritual breathing barely begins before it is quickly snuffed out.

The Parable of the Sower describes a farmer (Jesus) who is sowing seed on four very different types of soils. This is a helpful parable to read when thinking about salvation.

Some seed fell on a hard pathway and some birds ate it up before it penetrated the ground. Some seed fell on a thin skin of topsoil overlaying a shelf of solid rock. The seed sprang up quickly, but the hot sun soon scorched and withered the new plants because they had small, shallow roots. Some other seed fell among thorn bushes which choked the life out of the sprouts. However, some of the seed fell on good soil and produced a prodigious crop of thirty to one hundred times what was sown (Matthew 13:1-9).

Man jumps 1.63m from standing start

Kevin Bania is the holder of an unofficial world record after what you’ll doubtless agree is a quite extraordinary jump.

From a standing start, Bania leaps from the floor up to a platform just over 1.63m high (64.4375 inches).

Amusingly, that’s the same height as Victoria Beckham, so, if you can imagine it, Bania could just as easily have leapt on to her head, and (providing she kept still) landed and kept his balance.

At 5’10” himself, Bania can jump to within six inches (approximately 15cm) of his own height.

The 31-year-old Bania is a CrossFit athlete, a gym-based sport based on a variety of weightlifting, sprinting and jumping exercises.

Mark 9: 14-29:

14When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.15Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were amazed and began running up to greet Him.16And He asked them, “What are you discussing with them?”17And one of the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;18and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it.19And He answered them and said, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!”20They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.21And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.22“It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!”23And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.”24Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”25When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.”26After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!”27But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up.28When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?”29And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”

739kb of data stored on artificially created DNA – somebody say freaky!

Scientists in Britain have announced a breakthrough in the quest to turn DNA into a revolutionary form of data storage that could fit the world’s entire three billion terabytes of stored data into the palm of your hand.

They said a speck of man-made DNA could hold mountains of data that could be freeze-dried, shipped and stored, potentially for thousands of years. The contents are “read” by sequencing the DNA – as is routinely done today, in genetic fingerprinting and so on – and turning it back into computer code.

“We already know that DNA is a robust way to store information because we can extract it from bones of woolly mammoths, which date back tens of thousands of years, and make sense of it,” said Nick Goldman of the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge, a co-author of the study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

The study reported that the institute’s team had stored all 154 Shakespeare sonnets, a photo, a PDF of a scientific paper, and a 26-second sound clip from US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jnr’s “I Have a Dream” speech in a barely visible bit of DNA in a test tube.

“This is God’s work” – 65 billion dollar worth Bill Gates

Bill Gates interview: I have no use for money. This is God’s work

William Henry “Bill” Gates is a rich man. His estimated wealth, some 65  billion measured in US dollars, equals the annual GDP of Ecuador, and maybe a bit more than that of Croatia. By this rather crude criterion, the founder of Microsoft is worth two Kenyas, three Trinidads and a dozen or so Montenegros. Not bad for a university dropout.

Gates is also mortal, although some of his admirers may find that hard to believe, and as they say, there are no pockets in shrouds. So he is now engaged in the process of ridding himself of all that money in the hope of extending the lives of others less fortunate than himself.

“I’m certainly well taken care of in terms of food and clothes,” he says, redundantly. “Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point. Its utility is entirely in building an organisation and getting the resources out to the poorest in the world.”

Inside Job

‘Inside Job’ provides a comprehensive analysis of the global financial crisis of 2008, which at a cost over $20 trillion, caused millions of people to lose their jobs and homes in the worst recession since the Great Depression, and nearly resulted in a global financial collapse. Through exhaustive research and extensive interviews with key financial insiders, politicians, journalists, and academics, the film traces the rise of a rogue industry, which has corrupted politics, regulation, and academia. It was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China.

ESPN's Jemele Hill Tweets Out a Photo of an Incredibly Racist Letter She Received Recently

Over the course of the last year, Jemele Hill has become a jack of all trades at ESPN. Although she’s held down a column on ESPN.com for the last six years or so, she’s branched out and taken on a lot more work in recent times. From manning the desk on ESPN First Take to working the sidelines as a college football sideline reporter, she’s done a little bit of everything for the Worldwide Leader in Sports. And, apparently, not everyone likes it.

Earlier today, Hill tweeted out a photo of a handwritten letter that she received recently after she filled in for Colin Cowherd on The Herd. And, it’s one of the most disgusting, racist, hate-filled letters you’ll ever read. Check out a photo of the letter below:

We’re sure it’s not the only racist letter Hill has ever received (in fact, she mentioned that it’s just one of the many that she receives on a regular basis) but, because she chose to share it with the world, it sounds like it’s probably one of the worst.

Evidence Noah’s Biblical Flood Happened

The story of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood is one of the most famous from the Bible, and now an acclaimed underwater archaeologist thinks he has found proof that the biblical flood was actually based on real events.

In an interview with Christiane Amanpour for ABC News, Robert Ballard, one of the world’s best-known underwater archaeologists, talked about his findings. His team is probing the depths of the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey in search of traces of an ancient civilization hidden underwater since the time of Noah.
Ballard’s track record for finding the impossible is well known. In 1985, using a robotic submersible equipped with remote-controlled cameras, Ballard and his crew hunted down the world’s most famous shipwreck, the Titanic.

Gay Marriage To Be Banned In Church of England Churches

Gay weddings in the Churches of England and Wales will be explicitly banned under new laws on same-sex marriage, the Government has announced.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller said other religious organisations would be able to “opt in” and offer weddings to homosexual couples.

David Cameron has backed the idea of gay marriage in church but Mrs Miller said there was too much opposition.

Unveiling the Government’s plans in the Commons, she promised that religious freedom would be protected via a “quadruple lock”.

As well as the ban for the established churches, it will be illegal to force a religious organisation or individual to conduct a gay wedding or allow it to happen on their premises.

A live dog is better off than a dead Lion

Ecc 9:4-5  Anyone who is among the living has hope—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. (Today’s New International Version)

I don’t know if you are aware of who Amanda Todd is but the story of her life, which came to a tragic end will (or at least should) give you food for thought. The video below will give you an idea of her story. I implore you to watch it after reading through these scribblings. Her tragic end goes to reiterate the point of the scripture above. That point is that without hope, life will lose meaning to anyone of us. The question for you and me to ask ourselves is “Where does my hope in life come from?” I can guarantee that if our hope is not rooted on solid ground/ an unshakable foundation, hopelessness will quickly set in and life will seem pointless. I’m careful to use “seem” and not “become” because I know for a fact that life is given for a reason. This is actually not just a fact but the TRUTH. “What is TRUTH?”, one might ask; that is a discussion for another time?

Are you religious enough for heaven?

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe…

Romans 3:20-22

Every now and then I’m asked, “Are you one of those narrow-minded Baptists that think you’re the only ones going to heaven?” I love that question because I get to respond, “I’m actually more narrow-minded than that. I think there’s a lot of Baptists that aren’t going to get there!”

You can be a Baptist, a Methodist, a Catholic, a Presbyterian, or a pedestrian and still not know Jesus Christ. You can do all the right things: Practice your religion and go to church. But just calling yourself a Christian is not what makes you saved.

Religion vs. Relationship

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 4:10

The famed evangelist Billy Graham suggested on one occasion that at least 75 percent of church members in America don’t know Jesus Christ in a personal way. I don’t know if that number is correct, but I do know that many people often substitute religion for a relationship with Christ.

All over our nation today, people are relying on their religious heritage or family background as their way to God. All the externals are present—church attendance, good works, nice family. It’s all there. But is the truth of God in their lives? Do they follow Christ and live each day to be more like Him?
